Ukrainian Women Break Silence on Sexual Assault Amid War Trauma
A growing number of Ukrainian women are now willing to share their experiences of sexual violence suffered during the war, challenging the stigma attached to these traumas.
In a small village in the Kherson region of southern Ukraine, the resurgence of voices is creating waves of change. This quiet revolution is led by a 77-year-old former teacher named Liudmyla, who bravely shared her painful story of survival after enduring rape and abuse three years ago during Russian occupation. Her courageous efforts have inspired a series of village meetings aimed at raising awareness of conflict-related sexual violence, a matter that has remained shrouded in silence due to societal stigma surrounding sexual assault.
Joined by fellow survivors, Tetyana, aged 61, and Alisa Kovalenko, aged 37, Liudmyla has spoken openly at these gatherings, which mark a pivotal moment for women in the region to reclaim their narratives and demand acknowledgment of their suffering.
The figures are staggering: since the Russian invasion began in February 2022, Ukrainian prosecutors have recorded more than 344 cases of sexual violence tied to the conflict, affecting at least 220 women, alongside cases involving underage victims. Despite these numbers, the cultural stigma in Ukraine—a nation steeped in tradition and conservative values—has led many victims to remain silent about their experiences.
While Liudmyla and her group advocate for awareness and support, their own identities remain concealed to protect their privacy, demonstrating the continued fear surrounding these issues. Alisa Kovalenko, on the other hand, has long advocated for victims, having been a rape survivor during the previous conflict with Russian-backed separatists in 2014.
As these women continue to share their stories, there’s a sense of hope that their bravery will inspire others to speak out and seek justice in a war that has inflicted both physical and emotional scars. The courage of these women shines a light on the often-overlooked consequences of war, addressing an urgent need for comprehensive support for survivors of sexual violence in Ukraine.
