Ahead of a critical meeting between Trump and Putin, Ukraine's President vows to retain territorial integrity.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has emphasized that his country will not agree to any territorial concessions to Russia, coming just days before a significant meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Scheduled for August 15 in Alaska, this meeting aims to address the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which has persisted since Russia's large-scale invasion in February 2022.
In a Telegram message, Zelensky asserted that “Ukrainians will not give their land to the occupier,” reinforcing Ukraine's stance that any solution for peace must involve Ukrainian participation. He expressed commitment to working with allies towards what he describes as a “real” and “lasting” peace.
The Ukrainian President's comments arose in response to Trump’s remarks earlier, suggesting that Ukraine might consider territorial adjustments to negotiate an end to the conflict. Trump mentioned the significant loss of life on both sides due to the war, suggesting that redrawing borders could be beneficial. However, he did not clarify what such adjustments would entail.
Zelensky remarked that the principles surrounding Ukraine's territorial integrity are enshrined in the nation's Constitution, stating, “No one will and cannot deviate from this.” He dismissed any proposals delicately hinted at by Trump that might undermine Ukraine's sovereignty, stressing that any diplomatic solutions excluding Ukraine would be against the pathways to lasting peace.
As international discussions progress, Zelensky maintains that Ukraine is open to realistic peace initiatives that involve all parties equally, insisting on a collaborative effort with global partners to ensure stability and resistance to further territorial claims from Moscow.
