Communities in northern Queensland are reeling from unprecedented flooding, with thousands returning home as conditions improve.
Flooding in northern Queensland has led to "incredible" devastation across the region, leaving many communities grappling with the aftermath, according to the state's premier. Although weather conditions have begun to improve, thousands who evacuated are now cautiously returning home amidst ongoing flood warnings and power outages.
Premier David Crisafulli spoke to the ABC, describing the disaster as a significant test of community resilience. The area has experienced nearly 2 meters (6.5 feet) of rain since Saturday, causing substantial flooding and disruptions. While locals in Townsville woke to only light rain and less severe flooding than expected, officials remain concerned about the damage that has occurred elsewhere.
"The easing conditions mean that some suburbs may have been spared from the worst," said Crisafulli, highlighting that earlier forecasts had suggested up to 1,700 homes could be at risk. However, the impact remains severe further north in towns like Ingham and Cardwell, where damaged roads and communication issues have hampered damage assessments.
Mr. Crisafulli, who has personal ties to Ingham, reported shocking images of flooding in areas previously thought secure. With over 8,000 properties still without power and a critical highway partially collapsed, recovery efforts face significant hurdles. The premier warned that rebuilding these communities would require considerable time and resources.
