Missile Attack Near Tel Aviv Airport Raises Alarms Amid Ongoing Regional Tensions
A missile launched from Yemen struck near Ben-Gurion Airport, temporarily suspending flights and injuring two.
A missile launched from Yemen struck near Tel Aviv's Ben-Gurion Airport on Sunday, injuring two people and prompting the temporary suspension of several flights. The Israeli military confirmed that attempts to intercept the missile were made, and the impact was identified close to the airport’s main terminal. Thankfully, there were no fatalities reported despite the frightening circumstances.
Witnesses and videos shared on social media illustrated the chaos that ensued as a plume of dark smoke rose from the area near Terminal 3, where the majority of international flights operate. Sirens rang out, causing passengers and personnel to rush for safety. In the aftermath, emergency services reported treating individuals for injuries caused by the blast as well as those who were hurt in the rush to find shelter.
Before the missile strike, the Israel Airport Authority noted that there were 422 flights slated to operate that day. Following the incident, the airport authority activated a protocol that temporarily halted all flights, although operations were expected to resume shortly thereafter.
The missile strike came as the Iranian-backed Houthi militia, which has targeted Israel in solidarity with Hamas, renewed its missile operations after a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict was lifted in mid-March. Despite the Israeli military’s success in intercepting many missiles, fragments continue to pose risks to safety across the region.
The ongoing clashes underscore the fragile security situation in the region, as tensions between Israel and various militias escalate.
