The Freedom Flotilla Coalition had set sail with intentions to challenge what they decried as "Israel's illegal siege and blockade" of Gaza. In light of the event, the Maltese government confirmed that a fire on board was "brought under control overnight," and local authorities were monitoring the vessel. There were initially different reports regarding the onboard presence, with the NGO stating there were 30 activists aboard, while the government mentioned 12 crew members and four activists.
