Activists from the Freedom Flotilla Coalition reported a harrowing incident involving their aid ship, The Conscience, which was allegedly attacked by drones in international waters near Malta early on Friday. The incident occurred at 00:23 local time (22:23 GMT), immediately prompting the ship to send out an SOS distress signal.

The Freedom Flotilla Coalition had set sail with intentions to challenge what they decried as "Israel's illegal siege and blockade" of Gaza. In light of the event, the Maltese government confirmed that a fire on board was "brought under control overnight," and local authorities were monitoring the vessel. There were initially different reports regarding the onboard presence, with the NGO stating there were 30 activists aboard, while the government mentioned 12 crew members and four activists.

Accusations flared from the NGO, pointing towards Israeli forces as responsible for the drone attack. They called for Israeli ambassadors to respond to this alleged breach of international law. While the Israeli military stated they were investigating the claims, the Freedom Flotilla Coalition shared a video that depicted flames on the vessel, which reportedly targeted the ship's generator, leaving it powerless and at risk of sinking.

At the time of the assault, The Conscience was located approximately 17 nautical miles (31.5 kilometers) east of Malta. In response to the SOS, Cyprus sent a vessel; however, the coalition expressed disappointment that it was not capable of providing the urgent electrical assistance needed. This situation arises amidst heightened tensions, as Israel had previously closed all crossings to Gaza, halting vital supplies and resuming military actions after a two-month ceasefire concluded with a devastating attack that resulted in significant casualties.
