Tragic Subway Attack Claims Life of Woman in Brooklyn
A terrifying incident on a Brooklyn subway leaves a community in shock as a woman is set on fire by an unknown assailant.
In a harrowing event that has left many reeling, a woman was tragically set on fire while riding a stationary F train at the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue station in Brooklyn early Sunday morning. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch described the act as "one of the most depraved crimes one person could possibly commit against another human being," as she addressed the press regarding the incident.
Around 7:30 AM local time, the unnamed victim was approached by a man who ignited her clothing using a lighter before fleeing, leaving her engulfed in flames. Despite the rapid arrival of police officers, who were patrolling the area at the time, the victim succumbed to her injuries at the scene.
Eyewitness accounts revealed that there was no prior interaction between the victim and the suspect, leading investigators to believe they did not know each other. According to Ms. Tisch, police officers stationed above the train car noticed smoke and quickly rushed to the scene, only to find the woman fully consumed by flames.
As the chaos unfolded, the suspect managed to remain in the vicinity, sitting on a bench near the platform. Responding officers were able to get a good view of him, prompting the NYPD to release his images to the public. Hours later, three high school students recognized the man aboard another train and promptly called 911. Police acted quickly, apprehending the suspect after searching the train's carriages.
Detectives are now working diligently to establish the circumstances surrounding the tragedy, including whether the victim was asleep during the attack. NYPD’s Joseph Gulotta emphasized that the woman was found motionless, though it remained unclear if she had been asleep or simply caught off-guard.
As the investigation continues, the community mourns the loss of a life taken too soon in this shocking act of violence.
