On Thursday morning, a shocking incident unfolded in central Munich when a 24-year-old Afghan asylum seeker drove his Mini Cooper into a union march, injuring nearly 40 individuals. Eyewitness accounts reported that the car noticeably accelerated as it approached the demonstrators. Authorities have confirmed that the driver confessed to carrying out the attack and are currently investigating if he acted alone.
The car crashed into a crowd of union members and their supporters, who were participating in a demonstration organized by Verdi, one of Germany's largest trade unions. The group had called for a one-day strike that included workers from various public sectors such as day care, garbage collection, and city administration.
Witnesses stated that they heard the engine rev as the vehicle sped into the crowd around 10:30 a.m. Local police officers, who were positioned at the back of the march, attempted to apprehend the driver and fired a warning shot during the arrest. Emergency services, including ambulances and a helicopter, swiftly arrived on-site to aid the injured.
As of Friday, authorities reported that 36 individuals had sustained injuries from the attack, with several being children. Among the injured, a twelve-year-old girl remains in critical condition in a hospital's intensive care unit.
