UK Imposes Sanctions on 'Settler Godmother' Daniella Weiss
The UK government acts against Israeli settler leader for her role in fostering violence in Palestine.
The UK Foreign Secretary, David Lammy, announced the sanctions, stating they reflect the government's commitment to addressing the violence and intimidation faced by Palestinians. Weiss, 79, has long been associated with the establishment of Jewish settlements in the Israeli-occupied territories, including the West Bank and East Jerusalem, areas deemed illegal under international law by most of the global community.
Weiss leads the radical organization Nachala, which has also faced sanctions. The UK’s sanctions list highlights her involvement in promoting and supporting aggression against Palestinians. In her defense, Weiss indicated that many families are ready to settle in Gaza, urging for continued Israeli efforts in the region.
Alongside Weiss, sanctions were imposed on fellow settlers Zohar Sabah and Harel David Libi, as well as two illegal outposts and a construction firm associated with settle developments. Lammy criticized the Israeli government for failing to address the increasingly aggressive actions of settlers, warning that these actions threaten the two-state solution.
The UK also suspended free trade negotiations with Israel, citing the government’s policies in the territories as unacceptable. In response, an Israeli foreign ministry spokesperson dismissed the sanctions as unjustified and harmful to British economic interests.
This action came after a joint statement from leaders of the UK, France, and Canada urged Israel to cease military operations in Gaza and allow humanitarian aid into the area, which has faced significant limitations. While Israel announced it would permit a limited amount of food to enter Gaza, aid officials highlighted that the needs far exceed what is being provided. The situation continues to unfold amidst an ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region.
