Denis Coulson sentenced to 14 years after being found guilty in Bordeaux, alongside other former players.
Former Irish rugby standout Denis Coulson has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for the horrific crime of rape, following a court ruling in Bordeaux, France. The incident took place in 2017 and has now led to a significant legal outcome for the 30-year-old Dublin-born former player, who also had stints with Connacht and French club Stade Français.
Coulson was one of two ex-players convicted on the same day, with Chris Farrell, a member of Ireland's Grand Slam-winning team from the 2018 Six Nations, receiving a four-year sentence. Farrell’s punishment includes two years suspended, meaning he will avoid prison time. However, he must wear an electronic tag for two years and remain within France's borders.
Both players, along with three others from FC Grenoble, were on trial, where the court heard testimonies regarding the actions surrounding the rape. Loick Jammes, a 30-year-old French player, was also convicted and received a 14-year sentence, while New Zealand's Rory Grice, 34, was sentenced to 12 years in prison. Dylan Hayes, another New Zealander aged 30, faced a two-year suspended sentence for failing to prevent the crime.
Despite the severity of the charges, all five defendants maintained their innocence throughout the proceedings. The consequences of this trial highlight the ongoing scrutiny facing athletes and the imperative of accountability in all professional sports.
