In a significant advancement towards reconciliation, the French National Assembly voted on Monday to promote Alfred Dreyfus, a Jewish military officer wrongfully convicted of espionage in 1894 due to rampant antisemitism within the French military. After over 130 years, the move represents an important step towards acknowledging the systemic discrimination that led to Dreyfus's conviction and imprisonment in French Guiana.
The unanimous vote by the lower house of Parliament might pave the way for further reparative actions in the face of rising antisemitism in France, highlighted by recent desecrations of Jewish memorials. Following the Assembly's decision, the bill now awaits approval in the Senate, where it is anticipated to receive substantial support.
“This decision brings us immense joy,” expressed Michel Dreyfus, the great-grandson of the officer, in an interview with RTL radio. “While my ancestor was exonerated in a judicial capacity, he was never recognized militarily—a deep scar that prompted his exit from the army,” he added.
Gabriel Attal, the bill's author and former centrist prime minister, depicted Dreyfus's story as a cringe-worthy account of humiliation and wrongful accusation fueled by his Jewish heritage. “This promotion is a testament to his valor and a tribute to his unwavering dedication to the Republic,” Attal remarked.
