Remembering Mauro Morandi: Italy's Iconic Island Hermit Passes Away at 85

The man known as Italy's Robinson Crusoe, Mauro Morandi, has died, leaving behind a legacy of solitude and inspiration from his time on Budelli Island.

Mauro Morandi, who captivated the world with his solitary life on Budelli Island off Sardinia, has died at 85. His unique choice of a hermitic lifestyle and reflections on isolation have left a lasting impact.

Mauro Morandi, recognized as Italy’s Robinson Crusoe, passed away at the age of 85 on January 3 in Modena, Italy, due to a brain hemorrhage. Morandi's life, marked by his remarkable 32-year residence on the uninhabited Budelli Island, situated off Sardinia’s northern coast, was a testament to his deep affection for solitude. He first set foot on the pristine island in 1989 and quickly fell in love with its untouched beauty.

Unlike the famous fictional character created by Daniel Defoe, Morandi intentionally chose a life of seclusion, relishing in the quiet and simplicity it offered. However, after being forced to leave the island in 2021, he expressed his frustration on social media, lamenting the ongoing battle against those wishing to evict him.

Morandi’s extraordinary lifestyle inspired multiple books, songs, short documentaries, and countless media interviews. His insights became particularly sought after during the isolation experienced worldwide amid the COVID-19 pandemic. In a reflective interview with CNN in 2020, he remarked on the power of reading and contemplation, suggesting that many shy away from reflection due to the uncomfortable truths it may unveil about their lives.

Mauro Morandi has left behind a legacy resonant with those who ponder the nature of freedom, solitude, and the essence of truly living.
