Rising Dissent: Historic Anti-Hamas Protest Erupts in Gaza

The recent anti-Hamas protest, marked as the largest since the war's onset in Gaza, witnessed citizens expressing discontent against the group's rule. Masked militants intervened, demonstrating the tense environment of resistance coupled with violent suppression.

Hundreds joined the largest anti-Hamas protest in Gaza since the start of the war, rallying in Beit Lahia to demand the group relinquish its power. Demonstrators were seen chanting slogans like "out, out, out, Hamas out" while masked Hamas militants armed with guns and batons intervened to forcefully disperse the gathering, leading to multiple assaults on attendees. Videos circulating on social media revealed young protesters voicing their grievances as frustration mounted due to the group's recent handling of the conflict.

Pro-Hamas supporters attempted to diminish the protests' implications, labeling participants as traitors, while Hamas remained silent on the matter. The unrest in northern Gaza followed recent escalations, wherein Islamic Jihad launched rockets into Israel, leading to an Israeli military operation that increased public anger. This surge in violence resulted in significant casualties, including hundreds of Palestinian deaths and widespread displacement.

Beit Lahia resident Mohammed Diab, who lost his brother in an Israeli airstrike, stated, "We refuse to die for anyone, for any party's agenda or the interests of foreign states." His sentiment echoed a growing dissatisfaction across Gaza with Hamas's long-standing leadership since their 2007 electoral victory and subsequent ousting of rivals.

Protesters also voiced calls for an end to both Hamas and Muslim Brotherhood rule, as tensions climbed in response to worsening living conditions amid ongoing air strikes since March 18. The conflict, initially ignited by Hamas's assault on Israel in October, has resulted in substantial loss of life and displacement in Gaza.
