The Israeli military confirmed that its forces were deployed to the area, where both settlers and villagers were reportedly engaged in throwing stones at each other. They stated that several "terrorists" fired upon them, prompting a return of fire that resulted in hits. The military also reported the arrest of five Israelis at the scene.
In a sharp rebuke, the Palestinian foreign ministry condemned the settlers' actions as a "terrorist assault," claiming they opened fire on villagers in their homes. They also alleged that Israeli forces obstructed ambulance crews from reaching the wounded and delayed fire response efforts for several hours.
Tensions have surged since Hamas's attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, leading to a notable rise in both the frequency and severity of settler attacks. The United Nations has recorded a staggering 487 incidents resulting in casualties or property damage in the first four months of the year, with 181 Palestinians reported as injured.
The increase in settler violence is attributed to a political climate that has seen a right-wing coalition government in Israel push for settlement expansion. Just recently, Israeli ministers announced the approval of 22 new settlements across the West Bank, a move described as detrimental to the prospect of a Palestinian state. Palestinian Vice-President Hussein al-Sheikh has called for urgent international intervention to safeguard the Palestinian people.
In a separate incident on Wednesday, a 15-year-old Palestinian boy was shot dead by Israeli forces near Jenin, after an alleged confrontation involving explosive devices. The military justified their actions, stating that their forces were responding to a threat.
The escalating violence and ongoing occupation have left a heavy toll, with the United Nations reporting at least 949 Palestinian fatalities since October 7, as Israeli military operations intensify in the region.
