Judicial Watch Sues DHS Over Trump Assassination Attempt Records
Judicial Watch takes legal action against the Department of Homeland Security for withholding documents related to the July 2024 assassination attempt on former President Trump.
The conservative advocacy group Judicial Watch has brought forth a lawsuit against the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), seeking the release of documents linked to the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, which occurred on July 13, 2024, during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
The legal action stems from the DHS's dismissal of a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request made shortly after the attack, where an assailant named Thomas Crooks opened fire at the rally. This unfortunate incident resulted in injuries to Trump, who was a candidate at the time, and claimed the life of one attendee. Judicial Watch has managed to secure some local records, including body-camera footage from Butler Township police and internal communications from the Butler County District Attorney's Office. However, they assert that federal authorities have continually obstructed requests for further information.
“Federal agencies need to come clean on the events that led up to the assassination attempt on President Trump,” stated Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton. He expressed frustration over the delay, saying, "It’s been eight months, and the American people still have no answers on how this happened under the Biden administration’s watch.”
As calls for accountability and transparency regarding presidential security intensify, this lawsuit may prove to be a critical first step in unraveling the intricate details of what has become one of the most significant breaches of security in contemporary political history.
