Norwegian Security Guard Detained for Alleged Spying for Russia and Iran

Authorities arrest a U.S. embassy guard in Oslo, raising alarm over espionage activities in Europe.

Norwegian authorities have charged a security personnel with espionage, linked to heightened concerns about Russian intelligence operations across Europe.

In a shocking development, a Norwegian man employed as a security guard at the U.S. embassy in Oslo has been apprehended, facing serious allegations of conveying sensitive information to Russia and Iran. Mohamed Orahhou, 27, was taken into custody and has been ordered to remain in jail for four weeks pending an in-depth investigation, deemed necessary due to the gravity of the charges.

According to Norwegian officials and Orahhou’s legal representative, he confessed to sharing intelligence with agents from Russia’s domestic intelligence service, the S.V.R., along with officials from Iran, though specifics about the information exchanged have not been disclosed. The Oslo court emphasized the serious nature of the allegations when deciding on the pre-trial detention.

"This is a very serious case," remarked Thomas Blom, an official from Norway's Police Security Service, indicating that the investigation is in its infancy and expected to be expansive.

This arrest takes place against the backdrop of increasing anxiety surrounding Russian espionage activities within Europe. Recent incidents of violence, arson, and sabotage have been linked to Kremlin operatives. Reports have surfaced detailing Russian schemes, including an attempt to utilize incendiary devices on cargo planes operating in Europe. Concurrently, U.S. intelligence has issued alerts advising American defense contractors to be cautious due to potential Russian sabotage threats.

Moreover, in recent comments, Ken McCallum, the head of the UK's MI5 spy agency, highlighted the persistent threat from Russian intelligence, stating that their operatives are actively working to incite chaos across British and European streets. The unfolding situation poses critical questions regarding national security and diplomatic relations, with the international community closely monitoring developments.
