Kyrgyzstan Removes Iconic Lenin Statue After 50 Years
Central Asian country repositions historical monument to enhance urban aesthetics.
Following a half-century of prominence, a monumental statue of Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin has been taken down in Osh, Kyrgyzstan, where it stood as the tallest Lenin monument in Central Asia. Erected during the Soviet era, the 23-meter statue was quietly removed this week and was photographed lying on the ground after being lowered by a crane. This decision comes as many former Soviet republics, like Kyrgyzstan, seek to redefine their identities with a diminished focus on their Russian past.
City officials have characterized the removal as part of an initiative to enhance the city’s architectural beauty, despite the sensitive geopolitical context. The action follows Russia's recent unveiling of a new statue honoring Josef Stalin, which may have affected Kyrgyzstan's decision given its close ties to Russia.
As part of the redecoration plan, local authorities announced that the now-empty pedestal will be replaced with a flagpole, similar to a previous instance in Bishkek where another Lenin statue was relocated. Although Kyrgyzstan achieved independence 34 years ago with the fall of the Soviet Union, traces of its Soviet heritage persist, including geographical landmarks named after Lenin, such as the prominent Lenin Peak.
