Anna Wintour Announces Transition from Editor-in-Chief Role at Vogue
Dame Anna Wintour steps back after 37 years but remains influential in Vogue’s leadership.
Dame Anna Wintour is stepping down as editor-in-chief of American Vogue after an impressive tenure of 37 years, making her the longest-serving editor in the publication's history. The 75-year-old British fashion icon will, however, continue to wield significant influence in her roles as Vogue's global editorial director and chief content officer for parent company Conde Nast.
In a message to staff, Wintour expressed a desire to create a new position to guide emerging editorial talent, introducing the role of head of editorial content at Vogue. She emphasized her continued commitment to the magazine, stating, "I plan to remain Vogue's tennis and theatre editor in perpetuity."
Wintour's remarkable journey in the fashion world began in London, where she served as editor of British Vogue before assuming leadership of its American counterpart in 1988. She played a pivotal role in revitalizing Vogue, transforming it into a leading fashion publication by showcasing diverse models and integrating affordable fashion with high-end couture.
Not only has Wintour made an indelible mark on the publication, but she has also been instrumental in organizing the Met Gala, a high-profile charity event in New York City, since 1995. Known for her iconic bob hairstyle and dark glasses—described by Wintour as a functional "prop"—she continues to be one of the most recognizable figures in the industry.
Her reign as editor-in-chief has even inspired the character of Miranda Priestly in "The Devil Wears Prada," a novel penned by a former assistant. Earlier this year, when asked by King Charles if she would retire, Wintour confidently replied, "firmly no," affirming her dedication to her work in fashion journalism.
