National Day of Mourning Announced for Jimmy Carter
State funeral scheduled as country mourns former president’s passing.
Former President Jimmy Carter's state funeral is set to take place on January 9 at the Washington National Cathedral, marking the national day of mourning for a leader renowned for his humanitarian efforts and lasting impact. Walter Mondale, Carter’s vice-president, had planned to deliver the eulogy but passed away in 2021; however, his son will now take on this honor.
Public ceremonies are scheduled in Atlanta, Georgia, prior to Carter's burial in his hometown of Plains, according to the Carter Center. Following the traditional customs recognizing the death of prominent figures, President Joe Biden has mandated that U.S. flags on federal properties be flown at half-staff for a 30-day period—this includes the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump.
The Carter family has expressed gratitude for an invitation from Congress allowing Carter to lie in state at the U.S. Capitol rotunda, where the public will have the opportunity to pay their respects alongside members of Congress and notable individuals. Following this tribute, Carter will be interred next to his late wife, Rosalynn, who passed away in November 2023.
Biden emphasized that January 9 should be a day of tribute for America’s 39th president, praising his life as one that illustrated the ideals of humility, service to others, and faith. Former President Donald Trump also conveyed his respect for Carter, acknowledging their philosophical differences while recognizing Carter as a “truly good man.”
Expressions of gratitude for Carter’s contributions have flooded in from various leaders, including former Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama. Notably, all four living ex-presidents are anticipated to gather for Carter’s services.
The national day of mourning will result in the closure of stock markets on January 9. Jimmy Carter served as president from 1977 to 1981, with his legacy including significant achievements in human rights advocacy, global peace, and environmental initiatives. His post-presidential endeavors were also noteworthy; he founded the Carter Center to address disease eradication and actively participated in Habitat for Humanity into his 90s. Jonathan Reckford, CEO of Habitat for Humanity International, expressed the deep sorrow felt at Carter’s passing, offering prayers for his family.
