Peru's President Secures Immunity Amid Rolex Scandal Investigation
Congressional committee dismisses impeachment proceedings against President Dina Boluarte despite ongoing "Rolexgate" corruption inquiry.
A congressional subcommittee in Peru has decided to dismiss an ongoing investigation against President Dina Boluarte concerning allegations that she accepted luxury Rolex watches as bribes. This ruling effectively protects Boluarte, whose popularity has plummeted to single-digit approval ratings, from any immediate impeachment proceedings while she remains in office.
The scandal, referred to as "Rolexgate," prompted police to raid her residence in March 2024, searching for over a dozen luxury watches that Boluarte reportedly failed to disclose. This inquiry was initiated after media coverage highlighted the expensive watches she was seen wearing at various public functions. The police raid followed prosecutors denying her request for extra time to respond to a subpoena which demanded proof of purchase for her watches. The government palace also fell under scrutiny during the investigation.
Peru's government at the time criticized the raid as "disproportionate and unconstitutional." Boluarte, however, has consistently proclaimed her integrity, asserting that she stepped into government "with clean hands" and intends to exit it the same way, claiming her Rolex watch was merely an older item she purchased with earnings made since age 18.
Alongside "Rolexgate," Boluarte is also facing a separate investigation surrounding a two-week absence in 2023 for undisclosed nasal surgery, during which she failed to delegate her presidential responsibilities.
Boluarte's presidency began following the impeachment of former President Pedro Castillo, who attempted to dissolve Congress and assume direct control. His removal ignited violent protests leaving dozens dead, with many calling for Boluarte to resign. Upcoming elections for both the presidential and legislative bodies are scheduled for April 2026.
