Amid scrutiny from a New York Times investigation, Premier Doug Ford of Ontario has initiated an inquiry into a long-term lease agreement forged with Austrian wellness company Therme, prompting concerns over possible misstatements regarding its operational experience.

The premier’s announcement came on Wednesday, following a detailed report by the New York Times that revealed alarming discrepancies between Therme’s claimed operational breadth and its actual capabilities. Ford specifically instructed his government to reassess the contract that bestows Therme a staggering 95-year lease for a planned spa and water park on an artificial island in Lake Ontario, mere minutes from downtown Toronto.

According to the Times, Therme presented itself as managing four to six wellness facilities across Europe in its proposals during the competitive bidding process. However, the company has only operated one facility in Romania, located outside of Bucharest.
