Tragic Hospital Attack in Sudan Claims Lives of Over 40, Including Children
WHO condemns ongoing violence in Sudan as hospital violence escalates, prompting urgent calls for protection of medical facilities.
In a tragic escalation of violence during the ongoing civil war in Sudan, more than 40 people have been killed in an attack on a hospital, with many of the victims being children and healthcare workers. The alarming news was shared by Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the head of the World Health Organization (WHO), who condemned the assault as "appalling" and demanded an immediate cessation of violence against healthcare facilities worldwide.
The attack occurred at Al-Mujlad Hospital on Saturday, located in West Kordofan state, an area that has seen fierce battles between Sudan's warring factions. The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have accused the Sudanese army of the assault, a claim supported by two civil society organizations, though the military has not yet responded to these allegations.
Since the onset of the civil war in April 2023, the humanitarian situation in Sudan has spiraled into what the United Nations has deemed the world's worst crisis, with substantial violence against civilians reported. The UN has described the widespread killing of civilians in some areas as a form of genocide, with both opposing sides accused of committing war crimes against healthcare professionals and institutions.
According to the Sudan Doctors Network, Al-Mujlad Hospital was the "only functioning healthcare facility in the area," serving essential medical needs, including a dialysis unit, predominantly for civilians. The WHO reported that amongst the deceased were six children and five medical personnel, with many others suffering injuries.
The motivation behind the assault appears to be the military targeting RSF fighters that were allegedly present within the hospital premises. While the Sudan Doctors Network assigned blame to the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) for the attack, both the RSF and the army remain silent on these claims.
Amidst the violence, UNICEF has expressed grave concerns regarding the deteriorating situation for children in Sudan and refugees who have fled to neighboring Chad. The agency revealed that their aid response currently lacks two-thirds of necessary funding, leaving countless children without vital services and at heightened risk of malnutrition, disease, and exploitation.
Reports of unspeakable acts of violence, including the sexual assault of children, have surfaced, contributing to a horrifying atmosphere in the war-affected regions. The international community continues to watch closely as the situation evolves, urging immediate action to halt the violence and provide support to those in need.
