Tragic Shelling in Sudan Claims Over 120 Lives Amid Ongoing Civil War

A devastating attack in Omdurman highlights the toll of Sudan's protracted conflict.

At least 120 civilians have tragically lost their lives due to random shelling in Omdurman, a city adjacent to the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, as the brutal civil war, now entering its third year, continues to escalate.

The Ombada Emergency Response Room reported that the shelling occurred on Monday in the Dar-Salam area, with the death toll still provisional and likely to rise. This incident marks a grim escalation in the violence that has plagued Sudan since April 2023, primarily rooted in clashes between the armed forces and the paramilitary group known as the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

As medical supplies dwindle and health workers face rising casualties from ongoing bombardments, the humanitarian situation grows increasingly dire. The conflict has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths, displaced over 12 million people, and created conditions reminiscent of catastrophic famine, as described by the United Nations.

The local emergency room has reported challenges in accessing specific areas due to the continued fighting, with much of Omdurman under army control, while the RSF retains authority in Khartoum and parts of the surrounding region. In recent weeks, the army has intensified operations in Omdurman, capturing critical areas and seizing weapons abandoned by RSF fighters in their retreat.

Residents on both sides of the Nile River have reported ongoing shelling incidents, with homes frequently hit by bombs and shrapnel, further complicating the living conditions and increasing civilian casualties. Both factions have faced accusations of targeting civilians indiscriminately.

The violence has hindered the operational capacity of emergency response teams, leading to several local health centers being forced to shut down. This closure has severely impacted medical services available to thousands of residents amid the mounting conflict.

As the situation unfolds, the international community watches closely, with concerns mounting over the escalating humanitarian crisis and the urgent need for intervention.
