Shelling at Omdurman Market Leads to Rising Casualties Amidst Ongoing Conflict

Fighting escalates in Sudan, resulting in numerous injuries and deaths near the capital.

Over 100 casualties were reported due to shelling at a market, prompting international concern as civil conflict continues.

Shelling at a bustling market in Omdurman, a city adjacent to Sudan's capital Khartoum, has resulted in a tragic spike in casualties, with medical charity Doctors Without Borders (MSF) stating the incident has overwhelmed local mortuaries. This incident, which occurred on Saturday, has been attributed to the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) by both MSF and Sudanese officials, a claim the RSF categorically denies.

Eyewitness reports indicate that the market attack has resulted in the death and injury of over 100 individuals, predominantly women and children, raising alarms from the Sudanese Doctors' Union. The ongoing civil war between the RSF and Sudan's army has continued for over 22 months, leading to tens of thousands of deaths and what the United Nations classifies as one of the most severe humanitarian crises in the world.

In a surge of military activity, the Sudanese army has intensified its offensive in Omdurman, attempting to reclaim control from the RSF, which still holds significant influence in the area. Eyewitnesses reported hearing artillery shelling originating from western Omdurman, confirming the RSF's continued presence in the region.

Following the devastating explosion, Al Nao hospital was inundated with victims, prompting MSF general secretary Chris Lockyear to describe the scene as one of "utter carnage." The Sudanese Doctors' Union has urgently appealed for nearby medical personnel to support the overwhelmed hospital, citing an alarming shortage of healthcare workers.

A survivor recounted the harrowing experience, stating, "The shells hit in the middle of the vegetable market, that's why the victims and the wounded are so many." Both conflicting sides have faced criticism for targeting civilian areas and health workers indiscriminately, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis further.

Amidst the skirmishes, numerous health centers have been forced to cease operations, significantly impacting medical services for local residents. The ongoing conflict continues to evoke widespread alarm domestically and internationally, as humanitarian efforts struggle to cope with the escalating crisis.
