US Transfers Guantanamo Detainee Ridah Bin Saleh al-Yazidi Back to Tunisia
The US Department of Defense announces the repatriation of Guantanamo inmate Ridah Bin Saleh al-Yazidi to Tunisia after eligibility confirmed.
The US Department of Defense has confirmed that Ridah Bin Saleh al-Yazidi, a detainee at Guantanamo Bay, has been transferred back to his home country of Tunisia. This decision followed a thorough interagency review process that deemed him eligible for transfer. The Pentagon, however, did not disclose whether al-Yazidi accepted any guilt regarding his previous detention.
Guantanamo Bay has been a controversial detention site since it opened in 2002, primarily used to hold individuals captured during the United States’ "war on terror," which began in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks. The facility is situated within a US naval base complex in southeastern Cuba. According to the latest Pentagon statement, there are currently 26 detainees remaining at Guantanamo Bay, with 14 of those detainees eligible for transfer.
In a related development, reports indicate that three men accused of involvement in the 9/11 attacks have reached a plea deal as discussions surrounding the fate of Guantanamo Bay detainees continue to evolve.
