Christmas Miracle at Sea: Baby Born on Migrant Journey to Canary Islands
A baby boy was born on a migrant boat attempting the perilous journey from Africa to the Canary Islands, amidst celebrations for Epiphany.
In a poignant incident marked by hope and hardship, a baby boy was born aboard a crowded migrant dinghy traveling from Africa to Spain's Canary Islands this week. The Spanish coast guards confirmed the rescue after spotting the inflatable raft on January 6, coinciding with the celebration of Epiphany, a significant Christian holiday in Spain.
The situation unfolded when coast guard crews noticed the dinghy off the coast of Lanzarote, which had been transporting numerous migrants. Upon reaching the vessel, rescuers were informed that a pregnant woman was on board. However, to their surprise, they discovered the newborn was delivered shortly before their arrival.
Domingo Trujillo, captain of the rescue boat, recounted how they found the mother lying on the crowded raft while another passenger held the newborn, whose birth occurred merely 10 to 20 minutes prior to their intervention.
The baby and mother were quickly airlifted to a Lanzarote hospital under medical guidance, and authorities reported that both were in stable condition with no complications. Commander Álvaro Serrano Pérez of the helicopter rescue team expressed to Reuters, "It being Three Kings Day, this was the best gift we could have received."
The journey from Africa to the Canary Islands remains perilous, with over 46,800 undocumented migrants making the crossing in 2022 alone, according to recent statistics. The Epiphany, celebrated with traditions such as children polishing shoes for the Three Wise Men to leave gifts, serves as a bittersweet reminder of the difficulties many migrants endure in search of a better life.
