Israeli Air Strikes in Gaza Claim 26 Lives Amid Escalating Conflict
Deadly air strikes target police stations and residential areas, worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Nine individuals were confirmed dead following an Israeli air strike targeting a police station in the northern region of Gaza, as reported by local health officials and first responders. In addition, multiple injuries were reported when missiles struck a marketplace in Jabalia town, with harrowing video footage capturing the aftermath of a collapsed building. The Israeli military justified its actions by claiming the strike was aimed at a "command-and-control center" utilized by Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad in Jabalia for orchestrating attacks.
The death toll continued to rise, with reports of at least 17 additional casualties throughout Gaza on the same day. Among the deceased was a family of six - two parents and their four children - who lost their lives when their home in Gaza City's Sheikh Radwan neighborhood was bombed while they were asleep. A relative, Nidal al-Sarafiti, highlighted the family’s tragic situation following the attack.
The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) confirmed that one of the deceased, identified as Ali al-Sarafiti, was a member of the armed group and had previously served a 13-year prison sentence in Israel for his involvement in an attempted suicide bombing. Other reports from Palestinian media indicated that three displaced individuals were killed when their family tent was struck near Nuseirat, and two children died as a result of a missile hitting another tent in Khan Younis.
Since the resumption of hostilities against Hamas on March 18, 2023, following the breakdown of a two-month ceasefire, Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry claims that nearly 1,978 people have died. Amidst ongoing military operations, Israel has faced international criticism for halting all humanitarian aid and supplies to Gaza for seven weeks, which the United Nations describes as severely compromising the ability of civilians to survive and disrupting their daily lives.
Israel’s military campaign against Hamas was launched in retaliation for a cross-border attack that occurred on October 7, 2023, resulting in approximately 1,200 Israeli deaths and over 250 individuals taken hostage. Current estimates from Gaza's health ministry suggest that over 51,300 lives have been lost due to the ongoing conflict.
