Tragic Loss: Eight Aid Workers Killed in Gaza Airstrike
A humanitarian tragedy unfolds as Israeli strikes target charity workers in Gaza.
A group of aid workers from the UK-registered Al Khair Foundation tragically lost their lives when an Israeli airstrike hit their vehicles in northern Gaza, as reported by the charity to the BBC. The incident occurred on Saturday, resulting in the deaths of eight individuals, including volunteers and journalists who were present to document humanitarian efforts. Hamas condemned the attack as a severe breach of the ongoing ceasefire with Israel.
The Israeli military contended that the airstrike targeted "two terrorists" operating a drone perceived as a threat to Israeli troops. They further stated that additional strikes were made against "terrorists" who converged on the site following the initial targeting. However, the charity firmly denies the characterization of its workers as terrorists.
Qasim Rashid Ahmad, the charity's founder and chairman, recounted to the BBC that their team was in the area to establish tents and document their work for promotional purposes. Ahmad detailed how two cameramen, after returning to their car, came under fire, and that others who rushed to assist them were subsequently struck by a drone that had been tracking them.
In addition to the fatalities, others sustained injuries and were swiftly transported to the Indonesian Hospital in northern Gaza, as reported by the Hamas-affiliated health ministry. Hazem Qassem, a spokesman for Hamas, condemned the incident, labeling it a "horrific massacre" targeting journalists and humanitarian workers.
While a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas has been effective since January, its stability is uncertain, with ongoing tensions raising alarms about a potential resurgence of conflict. The conflict had escalated following Hamas's attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, which resulted in around 1,200 Israeli deaths and the abduction of 251 individuals as hostages. In retaliation, Israel launched a significant military campaign that has reportedly led to over 48,300 Palestinian casualties, according to Gaza's health ministry.
