Multiple Strikes Uncovered: Israel Hits Gaza's Nasser Hospital Four Times

New analysis of video footage by BBC Verify indicates that Israel struck Nasser Hospital at least four times during its recent assault in southern Gaza, raising concerns about the safety of civilians and journalists in conflict zones. The attack, which occurred on a Monday, resulted in at least 20 fatalities, including five journalists.

Initially reported as two strikes, the investigation found that there were in fact four separate missile hits on the hospital, with the first explosion killing journalist Hussam Al-Masri who was filming for Reuters. Video evidence indicates simultaneous hits on two staircases, with a later double-tap strike involving two projectiles impacting milliseconds apart, targeting emergency responders and journalists gathering at the scene.

BBC Verify's analysis included multiple sources of footage, given the restrictions on international reporters in Gaza. Videos revealed significant destruction at both the eastern and northern staircases of the hospital, and also showed injuries among those present during the strikes.

Experts consulted regarding the munitions used suggest they could be Lahat missiles, fired from Israeli tanks. The quick succession of the strikes indicates that two tanks may have participated in the assault, raising questions about the execution and intentions behind the attack.

Despite ongoing international condemnation regarding the strikes, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have yet to fully address the details of the multiple attacks. Initially, they expressed regret concerning civilian harm but then stated they were responding to perceived Hamas activity in the area. Legal experts contend that intentional attacks on civilians, particularly in this instance involving a hospital, may contravene international law.

The aftermath of the strikes has not only drawn scrutiny from humanitarian groups but also underlined the increasing dangers faced by journalists in conflict regions, with at least 247 journalists reportedly killed in Gaza since the onset of escalating conflicts in October 2023.
