"Return Voyage: Astronauts Butch and Suni Head Home After Historic Mission"

"After a nine-month odyssey aboard the ISS, astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams gear up for their homeward journey in a SpaceX capsule."

"Trapped in orbit longer than planned due to technical glitches, NASA’s Wilmore and Williams prepare for re-entry, celebrating their scientific achievements while anticipating the comforts of Earth."

Following a remarkable nine-month stint aboard the International Space Station (ISS), NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams are poised to return to Earth. Their original eight-day mission turned into an extended journey due to technical difficulties with the Boeing Starliner spacecraft that initially transported them.

The duo, alongside NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov, is scheduled to undock from the ISS at 0505 GMT (0105 EDT) on Tuesday and aims to splash down off Florida’s coast later in the day at 2157 GMT (1757 EDT). However, this timeline remains flexible depending on weather conditions.

Their descent will be anything but mild; the SpaceX Dragon capsule will brave a fiery re-entry through Earth's atmosphere, potentially reaching temperatures of 1600 Celsius. The astronauts will experience immense g-forces as the capsule decelerates before four large parachutes deploy to ensure a safe ocean landing. Helen Sharman, Britain’s first astronaut, noted that despite the challenges ahead, the sensation of fresh air upon re-entry will be invigorating.

Wilmore and Williams' saga began in June 2024 on the troubled inaugural crewed flight of the Starliner. The spacecraft encountered significant issues en route to the ISS, prompting NASA to keep the pair aboard longer than intended. With the Starliner ultimately returning empty back to Earth in early September, they awaited SpaceX's next mission—specifically designed for a six-month duration.

Their extended stay has contributed to a wealth of scientific knowledge as they conducted various experiments and spacewalks, with Williams even breaking records for time spent outside the station. Despite the term "stranded," both astronauts emphasized that they were always safe, with spacecraft readily available for emergencies.

Leading up to their return, Wilmore expressed no concern about the prolonged mission and highlighted the inherent unpredictability of space travel. Similarly, Williams reflected on her time in space, sharing her desire to hold onto the inspiration derived from such a unique experience.

Amid speculation about political motivations for their elongated stay—sparked by comments from SpaceX CEO Elon Musk—NASA clarified that practical scheduling considerations dictated their operations. Former NASA astronaut Garrett Reisman supported this stance, emphasizing the significant costs and minimal time savings associated with a dedicated rescue mission.

Upon their arrival, Wilmore and Williams will undergo medical assessments at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, as long-duration spaceflight has tangible effects on the human body. Common issues include muscle atrophy and changes in blood circulation. They will engage in a rigorous exercise plan to reacclimatize to gravity, but first, they look forward to reuniting with family, friends, and pets.

As Reisman shared, the treasured experiences of life on Earth, from simple comforts to the feel of the sun on their faces, are what astronauts miss the most during their time away.
