**Czech Republic Battles Toxic Blaze from Freight Train Accident**

Freight train derailment releases toxic benzene, igniting massive fire and prompting emergency response.

A freight train incident in the Czech Republic has resulted in a large-scale fire due to the release of hazardous benzene, prompting a coordinated response from local firefighters and emergency services.

A freight train carrying the hazardous chemical benzene derailed and subsequently ignited in the Czech Republic, resulting in a fierce fire that drew emergency responders from multiple regions. The catastrophe unfolded near Hustopeče nad Bečvou, located about 50 kilometers (31 miles) southwest of the Polish border, with the incident occurring on Friday. Reports from local news outlets indicate that several tankers, alongside a locomotive, caught fire, generating a towering plume of thick black smoke visible from afar.

Fortunately, railway officials reported no injuries as a result of the derailment. Initial accounts indicate the train had "split apart," leading to the derailment of multiple tanker cars. The inferno also spread to a nearby electric substation, leading to power outages in the town of Hustopeče. Eyewitnesses described flames reaching heights of 20 meters at the onset of the fire, as highlighted in reports by Lidove Noviny.

In response to the crisis, the Czech fire service deployed dramatic drone surveillance footage showcasing the extensive damage, with several tankers severely charred and ongoing combustion visible. Firefighters utilized heavy foam to control the blaze's expansion while actively cooling other tankers to minimize the risk of further explosions. A helicopter and specialized chemical monitoring mobile lab were also dispatched to the scene. It took hours for authorities to finally secure the blaze.

The fire impacted about 15 of the 17 tankers aboard the freight train, each believed to be carrying approximately 60 tonnes of benzene. While not all of it is expected to ignite or leak, Lucie Balážová of the fire department emphasized the potential hazard. The estimated damage from the fire has reached around 125 million Czech koruna (approximately £4.1 million).

In light of the situation, local residents have been advised to remain indoors, avoiding opening windows and doors. While air quality readings have not surpassed pollution limits, officials are closely monitoring the situation. Authorities have begun an investigation into the cause of the derailment, with concerns surrounding benzene exposure highlighting the incident's seriousness. Benzene is known to be a colorless liquid with harmful health implications, including risks of unconsciousness or more severe complications with prolonged exposure.
