In a heartbreaking incident, a beloved Italian sniffer dog named Bruno was killed after consuming sausages filled with nails that had been maliciously thrown into his kennel. The tragedy has sparked outrage and condemnation, particularly from Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who described the act as "vile, cowardly, and unacceptable" on social media.

Bruno, a seven-year-old bloodhound, had gained fame for his role in locating nine missing people throughout his career and was even honored by the Italian government for his exceptional service. His trainer, Arcangelo Caressa, expressed profound grief and anger at the loss, revealing that he suspected he knew the individuals responsible for the heinous act—allegedly a revenge tactic linked to Bruno’s previous work in dismantling dog-fighting operations.

In an emotional Facebook tribute, Caressa shared, “Today I died with you,” showcasing the deep bond he had with the canine, whom he regarded as a brother. The dog's demise was discovered on Friday morning at the Endas search and rescue training center in Taranto, Puglia, where he had lived. Michela Vittoria Brambilla, an Italian MP and animal rights activist, has called for swift justice against the culprits. She emphasized that Bruno may have been targeted due to his involvement in seizing dogs from fighting rings. Furthermore, she referenced a newly enacted law, which she championed, that could impose prison time and hefty fines for those who harm animals through torture. Brambilla demanded that this law be utilized, given the suffering Bruno endured leading up to his death.
