Tragic Incident: Immigration Agent Killed by Migrants in Chihuahua
In a shocking event, an immigration agent was fatally attacked at a checkpoint in northern Mexico, prompting investigations and arrests.
A federal immigration agent in Mexico met with a tragic fate on Monday, as he was attacked and killed by a group of migrants at a checkpoint in the northern state of Chihuahua. The incident unfolded when the agent, named Luis Alberto Olivas García, requested to see their identification papers. According to the National Migration Institute, the attack took place at the Precos-Samalayuca checkpoint, roughly 30 miles south of the border city Ciudad Juárez, situated across from El Paso, Texas.
Confusion arose regarding the number of arrests made in connection to the killing. The national authorities reported three arrests—two Venezuelan men and a Colombian man. However, Jorge Armendáriz, a spokesman from the Chihuahua security ministry, clarified that only two Venezuelan men were in custody, with no official charges filed by Monday evening.
Reports indicated that Olivas García sustained multiple wounds, allegedly from a sharp weapon, alongside a head injury likely inflicted by a rock. Earlier that same day, he had been recognized for his commendable 30 years of service in immigration enforcement.
The Colombian migration authorities acknowledged the situation, stating they were investigating the matter further. Meanwhile, Venezuelan authorities had yet to respond to requests for comment. This unfortunate event has raised concerns as the killing of immigration agents is considered a rare occurrence in Mexico.
