In an effort to rejuvenate the economy, New Zealand opens its doors to skilled remote workers.
New Zealand has made significant changes to its visitor visa regulations in a bid to stimulate economic growth and attract skilled remote workers, often referred to as “digital nomads.” As of Monday, the new policy permits travelers to reside in the country for up to nine months while working for their non-New Zealand employers. Finance Minister Nicola Willis emphasized that this measure protects local jobs, stating that these foreign workers will not compete with New Zealanders in the local job market.
Willis described the updated visa regulations as an essential part of New Zealand's plan to reposition itself on the global stage as an attractive location for talent. Following a recession that hit the nation in late 2024, she referred to this initiative as a turning point to help shift the economy onto a “faster growth track.” The government is planning targeted advertising campaigns aimed at tech workers primarily from the United States and East Asia.
“We want more of the world’s wealthy and super-talented people,” said Willis, indicating that this new approach intends to capture both the interest of individual digital nomads and their employers. The initiative marks a strategic move for New Zealand as it hopes to revitalize its economy while embracing the future of remote work.
