Uganda's General Kainerugaba re-emerges on social media, making alarming threats against opposition.
General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the son of Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni, has made headlines once again after reactivating his X account just a week after resigning from the platform to focus on military responsibilities. With a bold declaration of "I'm back!" the general swiftly regained hundreds of followers, quickly igniting a firestorm of controversy through a series of provocative posts.
The 50-year-old army head has increasingly ventured into the realm of politics, violating military protocol and raising eyebrows about his geared ambitions to follow in his father's lengthy rule, which commenced in 1986. His social media activities have stirred fierce criticism, notably for his threats against the leading opposition leader, Bobi Wine, which included a statement about beheading.
In his return to X, Kainerugaba wasted no time, commanding Uganda's security forces to detain any opposition members found donning garments resembling military attire, and ominously warned of dire consequences for non-compliance. Furthermore, he threatened to expel an unnamed US diplomat who allegedly failed to give him "proper respect."
His recent remarks have reignited discussions regarding his political aspirations, especially in light of the general's past provocations on social media, such as earlier threats to invade Kenya, which necessitated an official apology from his father. While Kainerugaba attempted to downplay his threats against Bobi Wine as a joke, public sentiment towards the general remains tense, with his comments viewed as undermining the stability of Uganda's political landscape.
Despite the government's attempt to dismiss Kainerugaba's social media outbursts as "casual" observations, many fear the implications of his combative rhetoric. Proponents of democracy in Uganda express concern over his rapid social media resurgence, suggesting that it stands as a direct challenge to existing opposition forces as well as to international diplomatic relations.
As of now, General Kainerugaba's X account has collected over 1,000 followers—a contrast to the more than a million accumulated on his prior account. He has called upon his supporters to help reclaim his previous follower base, emphasizing his desire to maintain visibility and influence on the platform despite the ongoing turbulence surrounding him.
