Calabar Carnival Lights Up Nigeria with Festive Spirit

The vibrant Calabar Carnival, now in its 20th year, showcases Nigeria's rich cultural tapestry and attracts an influx of revelers.

Christmas spirit infused with cultural pride enveloped Nigeria’s southern city of Calabar this weekend as thousands gathered for the annual carnival, known as Africa's biggest street party. This festive gathering, which marks its 20th anniversary, welcomed an estimated two million attendees, as reported by AFP, showcasing the diverse ethnicities and traditions of Nigeria.

Revellers participated in a dazzling parade accompanied by colorful floats and enthusiastic dancers. The event, which takes place throughout December in Calabar, the capital of Cross River state, is particularly popular among the region's Christian communities. This year's carnival featured at least 14 participating bands vying for accolades while performers energized the crowds with their Afrobeats renditions blaring from sizeable speakers.

"This year's energy is palpable, with various designs and costumes on display," noted attendee Grace Job. The carnival not only celebrates contemporary Nigerian culture but also serves as a platform for addressing historical legacies. Some costumes illustrated the city’s historical connection to the Atlantic slave trade, including a striking design symbolizing the brass manillas used as currency from the 16th to the 19th centuries.

Among performances, Nigerian music stars Runtown and Iyanya entertained audiences at a concert held at a local stadium. The Calas Vegas troupe was awarded the prestigious title of best carnival band for the second consecutive year.

Cross River State views the carnival as an opportunity to attract tourists from Nigeria and beyond, fostering a spirit of cultural exchange and celebration. Through festivals like this, the rich traditions of Nigeria continue to be honored and shared with the world, showcasing a proud and resilient heritage.
