Authorities Make Significant Child Abuse Rescue in Vietnam

A woman's desperate attempts for monetary gain led to the sexual exploitation of her daughter, who has now been rescued, emphasizing a troubling pattern in online child abuse.

 

In a harrowing case of child exploitation, a 9-year-old girl from rural Vietnam has been rescued from her mother, who was livestreaming her sexual abuse to customers worldwide, including those in the United States. U.S. authorities announced the successful completion of the rescue mission, which comes after the abuse was first reported in December by The New York Times. The mother, who has not been publicly named, exploited multiple smartphone applications like Bigo Live and BuzzCast, reportedly stating she needed the money.

The abuse was brought to light when a man in Utah, who had paid to watch the horrific livestream, contacted the authorities upon his discovery. He subsequently provided evidence to the Canadian Center for Child Protection, initiating a significant investigative process. The child is now under state care, while the mother faces serious charges including the production of child sexual abuse material and can potentially receive a sentence ranging from 20 years to life in prison.

Efforts are ongoing to access the mother’s phone, which is expected to yield critical information about her American customers. An undercover agent from Homeland Security revealed that the United States is recognized as the leading country for such offenses, amplifying concerns about the relationship between technology usage and child exploitation.
