Remembering Émilie Dequenne: A Bright Talent Lost to Cancer
The Belgian actress leaves behind a legacy of award-winning performances, passing away at 43 after a battle with cancer.
Award-winning Belgian actress Émilie Dequenne has passed away at the age of 43 after a courageous battle with cancer. She first gained prominence at just 18 when she won the prestigious best actress award at the Cannes Film Festival in 1999 for her compelling role in the film "Rosetta."
Dequenne's remarkable talent shone once more at Cannes when she was honored for her performance in "À Perdre la Raison" (Our Children) in 2012, and in 2021, she secured a César award for her work in "Les Choses Qu'on Dit, les Choses Qu'on Fait" (The Things We Say, the Things We Do). While she primarily starred in French-language films, Dequenne also made an impact on television, playing police officer Laurence Relaud in the 2014 BBC drama "The Missing."
"Rosetta," which was directed by the Dardenne brothers, claimed the Palme d'Or at Cannes and showcased Dequenne's talent from her very first role. Luc Dardenne recalled how, on her first day of filming, she united the cast and crew, consistently elevating the production throughout the shoot.
In addition to "Rosetta" and "The Missing," her filmography includes titles such as "La fille du RER" (The Girl on the Train), "Pas Son Genre" (Not My Type), and "Close," which was nominated at Cannes in 2022. Tributes have poured in from across the entertainment community, including French Minister of Culture Rachida Dati, who noted that "Francophone cinema has lost, too soon, a talented actress who still had so much to offer."
In October 2023, Dequenne revealed her diagnosis of adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC), a form of cancer affecting the adrenal glands. In one of her final Instagram posts, she expressed her resolve in the face of adversity, stating, "What a tough fight! And we don't choose..." Émilie Dequenne's legacy in the film industry will be long remembered as a beacon of talent and resilience.
