Pope Francis Shows Resilience Despite Pneumonia, Says Italy's PM After Hospital Visit
Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni offers encouraging update on Pope Francis's health following her hospital visit.
Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni visited Pope Francis in the hospital, providing an encouraging update on his health status. The 88-year-old pontiff is currently being treated for pneumonia in both lungs at Rome's Gemelli hospital, where he was admitted on Friday because of a respiratory infection. Meloni expressed her happiness in finding the Pope alert, responsive, and humorous, stating, "We joked as always. He hasn't lost his proverbial sense of humour."
She conveyed her best wishes for his recovery on behalf of both the Italian government and citizens. Earlier in the week, the Vatican reported that medical examinations and chest X-rays indicated a "complex picture" regarding the Pope's health. Pneumonia can lead to severe inflammation and scarring in the lungs, causing pain and breathing issues. The Vatican's latest briefing mentioned that Pope Francis was alert during breakfast and could get out of bed and sit comfortably in an armchair within his hospital room while continuing with some work. However, he had to cancel a scheduled papal audience for Saturday and is not fit to attend mass this Sunday.
Outside the hospital, a steady flow of well-wishers and pilgrims gathered to pray, light candles, and leave messages of support for the pontiff. Meloni reassured the public of Pope Francis's resiliency and called for continued prayers for his health.
