Wild Boar Rillette Gets a Second Chance: French Court Rules for Owner's Custody

A heartwarming ruling allows Elodie Cappé to keep her beloved wild boar, Rillette, after a challenging battle against local authorities.

In a joyous turn of events, a French court has upheld the bond between a wild boar named Rillette and her owner, Elodie Cappé, allowing the beloved animal to remain in her care after a protracted legal fight. Rillette, who was found as a piglet in 2023, faced potential euthanasia when local authorities refused permission for Ms. Cappé to keep her. The court's decision has ignited celebrations among animal rights activists and garnered international attention for its compassionate resolution.

Rillette was discovered on Cappé’s smallholding in Chaource, France, left orphaned, and was welcomed into the family by a surprised Ms. Cappé. Initially thinking it was an April Fool's prank after bringing her home on April 1, her husband quickly became accustomed to their new family member. Despite attempts to release Rillette back into the wild, she returned home, solidifying the bond with Cappé. “She’s happy here,” stated Ms. Cappé, who has affectionately described the boar as her “best friend,” sharing many playful moments together.

The fight for Rillette's life involved significant risks, as keeping a wild animal could have led Ms. Cappé to face hefty fines or prison time. Receiving widespread support, including from notable figures such as animal rights activist Brigitte Bardot, the case highlights increasing concerns over wild boar populations in urban areas and the complex interplay of animal rights and conservation laws in France.

On receiving the court's ruling, which ordered local authorities to reassess her application and awarded her €15,000 in damages, Ms. Cappé expressed her overwhelming joy, stating, "I started partying - I screamed very loud as I was very happy." Her plans include a celebration with cake and champagne, sharing one of Rillette's favorite treats in a display of their unbreakable bond.

This touching story also draws comparisons to recent controversies about animal treatment, particularly a case involving a social media-famous squirrel in the United States, emphasizing the growing conversation around individuals’ rights to keep non-traditional pets.

As the court deliberates the final ruling, Rillette will continue to thrive in a loving home, a symbol of compassion in the face of bureaucratic challenges.
