In a harrowing incident on a mountain road in Bolivia, more than 30 individuals have tragically lost their lives following a bus accident that saw the vehicle plunge nearly 800 meters (2625 ft) in the Yocalla district, according to local police reports. The driver reportedly lost control of the bus, leading to the deadly fall.
Among the grievously impacted, fourteen passengers sustained injuries, four of whom are children, as confirmed by a spokesperson from a nearby hospital during a video briefing. The accident occurred in the perilous stretch of road that connects the cities of Potosi and Oruro, notorious for its treacherous conditions.
Authorities suspect that speeding may have played a critical role in the crash, as police colonel Victor Benavides shared insights with the AFP news agency, labeling the driver as "unable" to manage the vehicle's high velocity. This incident marks one of the most catastrophic road accidents in Bolivia for the year 2023.
Local news sources, including Unitel, have reported that some of the injured victims are in serious condition, further underscoring the severity of this accident. The country of Bolivia, with its challenging mountainous roads, is no stranger to such tragedies; last month, another bus accident near Potosi saw 19 fatalities.
