**Toxic Mushroom Cook Takes the Stand in Murder Trial**

An Australian woman claims her love for wild mushrooms was behind a tragic meal.

Erin Patterson pleads not guilty in a trial surrounding the deaths of three relatives after dinner.

In a high-profile murder trial in Australia, Erin Patterson, a woman accused of cooking a fatal meal with toxic death cap mushrooms, has taken the stand to share her long-standing passion for mushrooms. She has pleaded not guilty to the murder of three relatives and the attempted murder of another, claiming the incident was an unfortunate accident rather than a deliberate act.

During her testimony, Patterson explained her newfound fascination with foraging wild mushrooms, which began during the COVID-19 pandemic. Tragically, in July 2023, Patterson served beef wellington containing poison-laden mushrooms to her family at her Victorian home, which resulted in the hospitalisation of her in-laws, Don and Gail Patterson, aged 70, and Gail's sister Heather Wilkinson, aged 66. The relatives subsequently died, while Ian Wilkinson, the uncle of Patterson's estranged husband, fell gravely ill but managed to survive after extensive treatment.

Patterson acknowledged in court that death cap mushrooms were present in the meal but maintained that she did not intend to harm anyone. She shared experiences foraging mushrooms with her children in various locations and detailed her initial positive experiences with wild fungi that had coaxed her into expansion as a mushroom enthusiast. "I mainly picked field mushrooms," she stated, recalling details of her foraging adventures.

While she confirmed purchasing some mushrooms from local supermarkets, her defense argued that the specifics of their origin were unclear. The court also received insight into Patterson's changing relationship dynamics following her separation from her husband Simon in 2015, which became tense due to financial disagreements. She shared an emotional testimony about her caring bond with her in-laws, expressing regret over critical comments made in private messages.

Additionally, Patterson discussed her deep mistrust of medical professionals stemming from unsatisfactory responses to concerns about her children’s health, which ultimately influenced her decision to leave the hospital prematurely after the dinner incident. As the trial continues, Patterson's testimony raises questions concerning her motives and the events surrounding that fateful meal, as she is expected to return to the stand for further questioning.
