The soldier, whose name was withheld by IDF officials, admitted to multiple instances of physical violence, including punching detainees and using his weapon against them while they were restrained and blindfolded. These acts occurred between January and June 2024 and were witnessed by fellow soldiers, some of whom urged him to cease the abuse. A plea deal resulted in the soldier admitting to three counts of aggravated abuse and one count of unbecoming conduct.

Additionally, the court revealed that other unidentified soldiers might have participated in these abuses, which were reportedly documented on the soldier's mobile phone. Alongside the prison sentence, he received a suspended sentence and a demotion to private rank.

The Sde Teiman facility has faced scrutiny since its establishment following the Gaza war, amidst allegations of serious human rights violations. Reports earlier this year led to protests and further investigations into the treatment of detainees. A United Nations commission stated that many detainees have endured systematic abuse, including torture, which the Israeli government vehemently denies, maintaining it adheres to international legal standards and investigates complaints thoroughly.

As the Israeli military continues its campaign against Hamas following a deadly cross-border attack in October 2023, concerns regarding the treatment of detainees remain a critical issue. Current figures from an Israeli rights group indicate that approximately 1,802 Palestinians are classified as “unlawful combatants” in Israeli prisons, excluding military-held detainees.
