Japanese Toilets Warn Users: Avoid Toilet Paper for Wiping Seats
Toto advises against using toilet paper to clean their toilet seats, citing risks of scratches and discoloration.
Japanese toilets, often fitted with advanced features such as heated seats, automatic flushes, and music players, are synonymous with Japan's cutting-edge technology. However, Toto, a prominent manufacturer in the industry, has issued a surprising advisory: refrain from using toilet paper to wipe the toilet seat. The advice, stemming from social media complaints about scratches and discoloration, has raised eyebrows.
A representative from Toto explained to the Mainichi Shimbun that their bidet toilet seats are crafted from plastic resin, chosen for its resistance to detergents and its flexibility for intricate design. Unfortunately, wiping with toilet paper or dry cloth can create tiny, undetectable scratches that may trap dirt, further leading to premature discoloration.
Apart from Toto, other manufacturers echo similar sentiments, with cleaning experts recommending soft cloths dampened with water or cleaning agents instead of dry toilet paper. They strongly discourage the use of thinning agents, metal scrubbers, and abrasive materials, which can further damage the seats.
While Toto is exploring the development of more scratch-resistant materials, the company has confirmed that there are no immediate plans to change its current material. The Washlet, Toto's flagship product featuring an automatic lid, air dryer, and adjustable bidet pressure, highlights Japan's unique approach to toilet technology.
As these innovative toilets continue to enchant both locals and tourists, their thoughtful designs emphasize Japan's reputation for hospitality and attention to detail, making them a point of pride in the nation.
