Prominent anti-whaling figure Paul Watson was released from prison in Greenland following a rejection of Japan's extradition request.
In a significant development for marine conservation, Paul Watson, the well-known anti-whaling activist, was released from custody in Greenland after spending five months behind bars. His lawyer confirmed the news, stating that Danish officials opted to dismiss Japan's extradition request associated with historical whaling-related charges.
Watson, notorious for his bold confrontational tactics against whalers through his organization Sea Shepherd, was arrested last July in Greenland, which operates under Denmark's jurisdiction. The charges stem from a 2012 warrant issued by Japan that alleged Watson was involved in an incident that resulted in injuries to a crew member of a whaling vessel in 2010.
After his release, Watson expressed immense relief and excitement to return home for the holidays. "After five months, it’s good to be out, and good to see that they’re not going to send me to Japan," he stated in a video shared by the Captain Paul Watson Foundation. His lawyer, Julie Stage, noted, “It has been five long months,” and highlighted Watson’s keen desire to reunite with his family.
The Danish Ministry of Justice cited "the nature of circumstances" and the duration since the allegations were made as reasons for Watson's release. Stage applauded the decision, asserting that the accusations against Watson were unfounded. In an interview, Watson emphasized that his recent detention has given renewed visibility to Japan’s ongoing controversial whaling practices.
Prominently featured in the documentary series "Whale Wars," which aired from 2008 to 2015, Watson's endeavors have continually sparked debates on whaling ethics. As he now looks ahead to spending Christmas with his family, Watson remains steadfast in his mission to raise awareness against unlawful whaling activities.
