Iran's Supreme Leader Dismisses US Airstrikes as Inconsequential
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei asserts that recent US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities yielded no significant impact.
Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has publicly declared that the United States "gained no achievements" from its recent strikes on the country’s nuclear facilities. This statement comes during Khamenei's first public appearance following the recent ceasefire agreement with Israel, indicating a strong stance on Iran's position concerning the US military interventions.
Khamenei emphasized that the airstrikes did not "accomplish anything significant" in hampering Iran's nuclear ambitions, framing the US retaliation against a military base in Qatar as a substantial blow to American interests. Meanwhile, US officials, including Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, stated that intelligence suggests the attacks severely impaired Iran's nuclear capabilities.
In a Thursday press conference, Hegseth heralded the operation as a "historic success," claiming it rendered Iranian enrichment facilities inoperable. US President Trump, amidst claims that the strikes had "totally obliterated" vital nuclear sites, reacted with frustration to allegations suggesting damage might not be as extensive as predicted.
Khamenei’s recent communication followed a period of near-total public absence, raising concerns regarding his safety and whereabouts during rising military tensions. He took this opportunity to warn of potential further strikes on US bases if Iran faced future attacks, asserting that the repercussions for aggression against Iran would be "very high."
The exchange between Israeli and Iranian forces escalated earlier this month, coinciding with the International Atomic Energy Agency's announcement that Iran had breached non-proliferation agreements for the first time in two decades. Despite US and Israeli claims of nuclear threat, Iran reiterates its position that its nuclear program is solely for peaceful purposes.
In response to the ongoing conflict and external pressures, Iranian lawmakers recently advanced legislation calling for a cessation of cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), effectively halting nuclear inspections at Iranian sites. Reports have indicated significant casualties as a result of the airstrikes, heightening the already fragile situation in the Middle East.
Khamenei’s emerging rhetoric further compounds the already tense geopolitical landscape, as Iran positions itself against perceived foreign aggression while simultaneously portraying resilience in its nuclear ambitions.
