Egyptian authorities have launched an investigation following the sinking of a tourist submarine in the Red Sea that resulted in the deaths of six passengers. The unfortunate event occurred off the popular resort town of Hurghada, where the Sindbad vessel was providing underwater sightseeing tours. Out of the 45 passengers on board, primarily Russian nationals, five crew members were also rescued. Among the deceased were two children and a married couple of doctors, while several others sustained serious injuries. Reports indicate that the submarine may have struck a coral reef, leading to a loss of pressure at a depth of 20 meters (65 feet).
The submarine was a well-known attraction in the area, celebrated for its ability to descend to 25 meters (82 feet) and offer panoramic views of the Red Sea’s vibrant marine life. In the wake of this incident, safety measures for excursions in popular tourist areas are under scrutiny, particularly following another recent sinking event in the region. The investigation continues to understand the root cause of the tragedy and to ensure the safety of future tourists in Egyptian waters.
