In a move to power its AI data centers sustainably, Google has signed an agreement with Kairos Power to employ small nuclear reactors. The plan envisions the first reactor becoming operational this decade, with more expected by 2035. While financial specifics and plant locations remain undisclosed, the partnership marks a significant shift towards nuclear energy by tech companies. Michael Terrell, Google's senior director for energy and climate, emphasized the necessity of new energy sources for AI technologies, highlighting the potential of AI in a sustainably powered future. Jeff Olson from Kairos Power called the deal crucial for advancing the commercialization of advanced nuclear technology to help decarbonize power grids. Pending approvals from the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission and local bodies, the deal comes as Kairos Power begins constructing a demonstration reactor in Tennessee. Their smaller reactors use molten fluoride salt as a coolant, differing from traditional methods. As tech firms strive to cut emissions amid rising energy demands, nuclear power's continuous, virtually carbon-free electricity grows appealing. Global data center energy use could more than double by the decade's end, per Goldman Sachs, with growing emphasis on powering AI and maintaining equipment coolness. During last year's UN Climate Change Conference, the US joined an initiative to triple nuclear capacity by 2050. Despite its appeal, nuclear power faces criticism for safety risks and radioactive waste. In parallel pursuits, Microsoft plans to resume operations at the Three Mile Island plant, and Amazon purchased a nuclear-powered data center in Pennsylvania.
