Pope Francis Remains in Critical Condition as Global Prayers Intensify
Catholic communities worldwide hold vigils and prayers for the ailing pontiff who continues to fight pneumonia.
As the world anticipates his recovery, Roman Catholics across the globe have turned to prayer for Pope Francis, who remains in critical condition following a hospitalization that commenced on February 14. This past Saturday, the pontiff, aged 88, experienced a severe asthmatic respiratory episode, necessitating high flows of oxygen and a blood transfusion, as confirmed by the Vatican.
Francis, who has led nearly 1.4 billion Roman Catholics since 2013, faces significant health challenges, including pneumonia in both lungs. Worldwide, communities have come together in prayer, with many expressing concern for his well-being.
At the Myeongdong Cathedral in Seoul, spiritual tourists voiced their worries. “Pneumonia is a serious illness for his age. That’s why we should be worried,” 31-year-old Pat Santos from the Philippines remarked. His sentiments reflected the growing fear among the faithful, especially given the pope's past lung issues and ongoing discussions about possible resignation, similar to Benedict XVI's step down in 2013.
Medical experts indicated that Francis will continue to receive treatment at Policlinico Agostino Gemelli in Rome for at least another week. While critical on Friday, reports have suggested a further deterioration of his condition since Saturday.
During Sunday Mass celebrations worldwide, including special vigils held in the Manila Cathedral, prayers flowed freely for the pontiff. "May the Lord continue to extend to him his love, his mercy, and his healing," Father Vicente Gabriel Bautista urged his congregation. Prayers were echoed in services across Sydney and Melbourne, showcasing the unyielding support for the beloved figure during these trying times.
