In brief

Tropical Storm Trami has made its way to Vietnam after inflicting considerable damage in the Philippines, leaving dozens dead and many others injured.

On Sunday, Tropical Storm Trami struck Vietnam, arriving near the central city of Danang after previously devastating parts of the Philippines. Officials reported that at least 80 lives were lost and 66 others injured in the Philippines due to the storm, while 34 individuals remain unaccounted for. The Philippine Office of Civil Defense provided these figures as rescue operations continued amid challenging conditions. As Trami swept across the South China Sea, it was categorized as producing maximum wind speeds of 55 miles per hour, notably lower than hurricane strength. However, its arrival prompted warnings from Vietnam’s national meteorological agency of potential flooding and coastal landslides as it progressed inland. Areas south of Danang were predicted to receive up to 16 inches of rain through Monday night. In preparation for the storm, flights were halted at four airports, including Danang International Airport, but operations resumed on Sunday. The impacts of Trami were severe in the Philippines, where flooding engulfed multiple provinces, displaced over half a million residents, damaged roughly 28,000 homes, and caused power outages across more than 150 municipalities. Some disaster relief efforts were hindered by rising waters.Additionally, another tropical storm named Kong-rey is expected to impact the Philippines in the coming days, with forecasts indicating a path that brushes the densely populated Luzon island. This follows Typhoon Yagi from last month, which resulted in fatalities in both China and the Philippines before making landfall in Vietnam, underscoring the escalating challenges posed by tropical storms in the region. As weather systems continue to evolve, the resilience of affected communities will be under scrutiny, with recovery efforts likely to take precedence in the aftermath of Trami's path of destruction.
