In brief

S‑Oil Corp. posted a record third‑quarter net income of 1.43 trillion won, up 2,171.3 percent year‑over‑year, after operating profit surged 513.7 percent and revenue climbed 42.2 percent. The surge, driven by high oil prices and tighter lubricants supply, exceeds analysts’ expectations and signals strong refining margins ahead of the fourth quarter.

In Seoul, S‑Oil Corp. announced on November 2 that its third‑quarter net profit surged to 1.43 trillion won, a rise of 2,171.3 percent from a year earlier, after a regulatory filing reported higher refining and lubricants margins.

Quarterly Performance Highlights

According to a filing the company released, operating profit for the July‑September period vaulted 513.7 percent year‑over‑year to 1.4 trillion won. Revenue also increased 42.2 percent, rising to 11.96 trillion won from 8.42 trillion won a year earlier.

These figures positioned S‑Oil’s operating profit 6.2 percent above the average estimate surveyed by Yonhap Infomax. The estimate for net profit was not available, yet the company’s net income of 1.43 trillion won dwarfed the 63.2 billion won recorded in the same period last year.

Drivers of the Surge

"A combination of high oil prices, improved export refining margins and improved profitability in the lubricants business pushed up the quarterly results," the company said in the filing. It highlighted that stable operations were maintained despite geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and the Korean won’s appreciation against the U.S. dollar.

"A combination of high oil prices, improved export refining margins and improved profitability in the lubricants business pushed up the quarterly results."

Analysts note that S‑Oil expects refining margins to remain high into the fourth quarter, buoyed by low global inventories and strong seasonal demand for heating oil. Tighter lubricants supply, driven by prolonged production disruptions and logistical constraints, is also expected to sustain tighter margins.

Year‑to‑Date Performance and Future Projects

From January to September, the company swung to a net profit of 2.67 trillion won from a net loss of 48.13 billion won a year earlier. Operating profit during the same span rose to 3.6 trillion won from an operating loss of 136.29 billion won, while sales climbed 26.7 percent to 32.25 trillion won from 25.45 trillion won.

S‑Oil is building a 9.26 trillion‑won petrochemical complex as part of its Shaheen project, with trial operations now underway. The new facility, adjacent to the Ulsan refinery 360 kilometers southeast of Seoul, is expected to begin production of key petrochemical products—including ethylene, propylene and butadiene—in early 2027.

Saudi Arabia’s state‑owned Aramco holds a 63.4 percent stake in S‑Oil, underscoring the company’s strong international backing as it navigates rising refining margins and expanding petrochemical ambitions.
